Article Abstract:

While the Australian model of higher education has become the template for new fee regimes in a number of countries, including the UK, the reality of higher education in Australia does not live up to the claims that are made for it. While successive Australian governments since the 1980s have made commitments to improve access for students from poorer backgrounds, the proportion of students from the poorest 25% of the community reaching university has remained constant at 16% to 17% as a result of insufficient funding being provided for them

Get Africa's educational heart to beat once more

Article Abstract:

Long-term investment in higher education and universities in Africa is key to solving the region's problems. It is contended that good universities build institutional and human capacity, will create the leaders that will help Africa in the future, and are key to economic growth and the promotion of the good governance that will be vital for the area's sustainable development.

Decline in IT forces teaching job cuts

Article Abstract:

Australian institutions are downsizing as enrolments decline and hundreds of academics teaching IT have lost their jobs . Faculties and departments of IT have seen a fall of up to 60 percent in student numbers in the last five years as popularity of the subject has plummeted.
