A good man in Africa

Article Abstract:

Richard Leakey, of the Safina Party in Keyna, Africa, has warned a London audience that corruption in Kenya is so rife that the country may become another Nigeria. Leakey, a third generation African, has spoken out against the Kenyan government and says that it has absolute control of radio and television so that any opposing party has very little hope of positive reporting. Leakey realises the danger he is putting himself in by publicly declaring his views, although he feels compelled to fight to social justice and democracy in his country.

Gypsy professors roam US campuses

Article Abstract:

There is an excess of PhD students in the US, which means that it is difficult for them to find secure employment, and an increasing proportion of college staff works part time. There has been an increase in applications for grants which has meant a higher proportion of failed applications. Some graduate students are considering studying for masters degrees rather than PhDs in order not to become too expensive to hire. There is little reason for such an expansion in higher education argue some critics.

Doctoring the degree

Article Abstract:

Engineering doctorates have been developed at Brunel University, England, which use innovative methods such as students having to defend their ideas to a group of people in place of a viva. Submission delays are not permitted since students should be able to meet timeliness demands in industry. There have been drop-outs, but they have tended to be people who have found jobs. Graduates of this doctoral program have a good chance of obtaining work.
