AUT demands stall pay deal

Article Abstract:

The Association of University Teachers (AUT) could call its 47,000-strong membership out on strike following its failure to reach an agreement with employers regarding the status of its academic-related staff members. At a meeting in week starting 03 November 2003, all four non-academic trade unions officially accepted a pay deal that would see pay increase by 7.7% over two years. The AUT and Natfhe, both academics' unions, agreed to try and resolve differences relating to the deal by December 2003. However, the whole deal is threatened by an impasse between the AUT and employers over the status of academic-related staff - such as computing staff, librarians and senior administrators - of whom around 11,000 are AUT members.

Cover-up claims over debt research

Article Abstract:

University vice-chancellors have been accused of suppressing research on student debt ahead of the May 2005 general election in the United Kingdom in order to prevent criticism of the Government's higher education policies. Information obtained under the Freedom of Information Act show that the umbrella body of vice-chancellors, Universities UK (UUK), ordered that sweeping cuts be made of "politically contentious" portions of a study it had commissioned into the attitudes of students towards debt and the negative impact of employment during term-time. UUK has been a strong supporter of the Government's policies.

NUS UKPd1m in debt after internet deal collapse

Article Abstract:

The National Union of Students (NUS) is heading towards a deficit of UKPd1 mil following the collapse of a landmark Internet deal last year. Nick Gash, national director of the NUS, has confirmed that the NUS would declare a deficit of between UKPd800,000 and UKPd1 mil for the year to July 2003, although he insisted the union would be able to trade through without cutting services. Gash also confirmed that plans to sell the unions HQ were proceeding, although he insisted that this had nothing to do with the financial problems.
