Ability to link teaching and research should decide jobs, academy says

Article Abstract:

An academic's success in progressing up the career ladder should depend on their skill at linking research and teaching, according to the Higher Education Academy (HEA). Mike Prosser, HEA's director of research and evaluation, contends that all institutions need to develop the link between research and teaching and, in order to do this, should develop curriculum requirements to link research and teaching across all courses and ensure that promotion structures exist which reward staff who effectively link their research with their teaching.

Research fellows at universities in the UK are often poorly treated and their talent is in danger of going to waste, according to "The Freedom to Succeed" report produced by the Academy of Medical Sciences. Fellows, who have long been regarded as the future stars of academe, are often not given enough guidance on their prospects by their universities when their fellowships end and are left in the dark about the possibility of future employment.
