'Adults who have a mathematics A level earn almost 10 per cent more on average than people who are like them in every other way'

Article Abstract:

An analysis of the dearth of students taking up places on science, engineering and mathematics courses at universities in the UK, despite the fact that people with degrees in these subjects tend to earn amongst the highest average salaries. It is argued that students will continue to avoid taking science and maths courses until the incentives for sixth-formers change.

Article Abstract:

An analysis of the decline in mathematics standards in education in the United Kingdom. It is argued that taking the word of the government on the quality of school mathematics courses could put university standards at risk, therefore universities and the higher education sector as a whole need to insist that certain absolute requirements for competence be stuck to.

Article Abstract:

Issues relating to the declining number of maths teachers in the United Kingdom and the impact that this is having on the teaching of mathematics are examined. It is argued that the UK has to ensure that it has a strong supply of mathematical knowledge and skills, because these skills are much sought after by business and industry.
