All hands to the rescue

Article Abstract:

Junior university staff and senior managers should work together to address real problems such as high stress, low morale and poor staff management practices instead of focusing on government measures of success, such as generating income, claims Steve Shelley of Hertfordshire University's Centre for Research in Employment Studies in his new book "Working in Universities: The Reality from Porter to Professor". Shelley argues that, by conforming to Government-led systems of measuring higher education, universities are giving a false impression of success and that universities should adopt vertical rather than horizontal management strategies in order to combat this.

Virt-u dies with nothing to show but cheap porn

Article Abstract:

Issues relating to the collapse of a pioneering virtual university project for which the European Social Fund (ESF) provided two grants totaling UKPd2.3 mil are examined. The European Network for Integrated Materials Management, a UK-based European Commission research consortium, received UKPd1.4 mil of the ESF money for the development of the virtual university but is now broke, all but defunct and has failed to deliver anything, with the commercial spin-off company that it established to develop the university, Virt-uni.com Ltd, in liquidation and the Virt-u.com website address now being used by a pornography site.

Triple helix holds the key to win, win situation

Article Abstract:

Henry Etzkowitz, director of the Science Policy Institute at the State University of New York, argues that academia in Europe has a long way to go before it is capable of matching the entrepreneurial ethos of its US counterpart, where technology transfer is recognised as a principal product of the university system. Etzkowitz is aware that there is a tension between teaching and research at modern universities and concedes that this can never be fully resolved, but he insists that professors who work with their students to explore the opportunities of the wider world will find it a productive exercise to undertake.
