Learning resource centre

Article Abstract:

A new four-storey Learning Resource Centre has been built for Anglia Polytechnic University in England at a total contract cost of around 4.5 million pounds sterling. The building will be the core of the university's new campus. The centre includes a 700-seat library, dark-room, graphics studio and media department. Energy efficiency was a major design concern. Daylight is directed into the atrium via fabric light-shelves, while the top of the atrium incorporates fabric sails to provide further shading and light reflection. The interior is subsequently airy and light. Project management is described.

Altering the route of all evil?

Article Abstract:

Functional brain imaging has been carried out to show the module within the human brain that allows people to intuitively read others' minds. Functional magnetic resonance imaging and positron emission tomography equipment can demonstrate which parts of the brain creates perception, feelings and thoughts. The research is leading to the ethical problem that brain maps could potentially be used to manipulate certain behaviours and create personalities. Acts of violence could result from a failure to control impulses, with many murderers found to demonstrate abnormal frontal lobe activity.
