An enfant terrible reaches maturity

Article Abstract:

The British Sociological Association (BSA) plans to bestow honorary memberships on people who have been in the association for 50 years as part of efforts to stress the subjects long established role and ditch its image as the quintessential 1960s subject. John Brewer, chairman of the BSA, noted that while the move is designed to honor the commitment of those given honorary memberships, it is also designed to publicise sociology's institutional position in the UK.

A lifelong fling with Highlands and Islands

Article Abstract:

Jim Hunter, director of the UHI Centre for History, is a firm believer that locally available higher education is crucial for development of a region and has for almost two decades campaigned for a university of the Highlands and Islands. Fruits of the effort can be seen in the UHI Millennium Institute which is a federation of 15 colleges and research institutes aiming to win full university status in 2007.

Fire up the little Einsteins

Article Abstract:

Researchers are allowing schoolchildren to contribute to their projects in order to spark their interest in science. Via the Grid, pupils involved in pilot projects supported by the Joint Information Systems Committee and research councils can see what scientists do and can feed into their research.
