Assailed by an old enemy

Article Abstract:

Veterans of the 1991 Gulf war are twice as likely to experience ulcers, arthritis and asthma as their contemporaries who were not deployed in the Gulf, according to an epidemiology study. The Gulf veterans are also about twice as likely to report symptoms such as loss of memory, insomnia and fatigue, and were two to three times more likely to present symptoms of psychological distress. However, their experience is not unique as identical symptoms are reported by some peacekeeping troops in Bosnia and non-deployed soldiers. Ill health is worst among Gulf veterans who were given multiple vaccines.

Public enemy number one

Governments are poorly prepared for a global bird flu pandemic and nothing is being donw to ensure that the people of the rich world do no abandon those of the poor to die, as some experts are fearing. Eighty-six percent of the world's population is living in countries which do not produce bird-flu vaccines and scientists believe that governments in countries producing a vaccine will face internal political pressure to nationalise their product and prohibit exports.

When the personal becomes public. (the Data Protection Act and the World Wide Web)

Article Abstract:

There is a danger that the data protection law may be entirely overlooked by businesses keen to publish information on the World Wide Web. There is an increasing amount of personal data being held on academic and commercial Internet sites. In education institutions, a data protection officer would be required to ensure the proper registration of data that is held.
