Bird brain clue to memory riddle

Article Abstract:

Research has been carried out on the memory of chicks which could increase understanding of Alzheimer's disease. Chicks learn not to peck at beads associated with a bitter taste, and this affects their synapses. Less bitter beads are not remembered for so long. Alzheimer's disease is linked to the build-up of a protein which affects synapses, and research into adhesion molecules in chicks can help in the development of drugs which alleviate Alzheimer's disease.

Cutting edge: why the clue to Antarctica's extinct plants lies in a Chilean rainforest

Article Abstract:

In order to understand the ecology of Antarctica's extinct biomes, David Cantrill began researching the ecology of the Valdivian forests in southern Chile. The closest analogue to the vegetation that grew in Antarctica is found in the Valdivian rain forests. The article provides additional information on the ecology in both regions.
