Breaking down the borders of science

Article Abstract:

An examination of the new interdisciplinary graduate training programme which has been launched by Oxford University. The new programme will operate from Oxford?s Doctoral Training Centre, which has been established with UKPd5.3 mil investment from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council. The council will fund 50 students from engineering, mathematical and physical sciences backgrounds over the next five years. The students, who will undertake doctoral research programmes at the point where physical and life sciences meet, will take a four-year training programme that will result in DPhil qualifications.

Defend science, demand MPs

Article Abstract:

Plans to close the chemistry department at Sussex University have prompted MPs to write a fiercely worded report in which the government is told to act to safeguard the future of vital science subjects in UK universities. The report also criticises the lack of powers available to the Higher Education Funding Council for England (Hefce).

An academic take on model villages

Article Abstract:

Cambridge and Oxford universities have both announced plans to build homes for their workers, many of whom have been unable to afford the housing in the areas around the universities. Cambridge's is the more ambitious plan, involving the construction of 2,500 home, while Oxford's plan involves the construction of 200 homes.
