Brighton loses appeal in discrimination case

Brighton University has seen an employment tribunal uphold a ruling that it discriminated against disabled lecturer Thalia Tabary-Peterssen by making it impossible for her to return to work after she took sick leave as a result of persistent migraines and chronic fatigue syndrome. The tribunal found that the Brighton employment tribunal was correct in its unanimous decision made in May 2002 that the university failed to make the adjustments necessary for Tabary-Peterssen to return to work and that the university had suffered a "failure of good management".

Plagiarist student set to sue university

Article Abstract:

Michael Gunn, a student at the University of Kent at Canterbury who admits plagiarising work from Internet sources throughout his three-year English degree course, plans to sue the university for negligence after being caught out the day before his final exam. Gunn claims that he was unaware that the unattributed cutting and pasting of material from sources into his essays was actually plagiarism and contends that the university's guidance on what constituted acceptable research techniques was lacking and that the university should have caught him earlier.

Law professor faces claims of staffing bias

Mike McConville, one of the UK's leading law professors, has been reprimanded for "misconduct" by an inquiry into alleged discrimination at Hong Kong's City University, where he is on secondment from Warwick University. Following a four-month independent investigation into what was described by the university as "bitter turmoil" in the law school, McConville was criticised for his conduct as the head of an all-British staffing committee that caused uproar when it failed to renew the contracts of eight Asian members of staff.
