Bullying rife in RAE run-up

Article Abstract:

A survey on workplace bullying in universities undertaken by The Times Higher Education Supplement has revealed that one of the major causes of such bullying is the research assessment exercise (RAE). Respondents to the survey alleged that some universities allow academics to get away with bullying because their work is likely to be well received by the RAE while others believe that the pressure caused by the RAE results in bullying.

Elite urge shift to light-touch audit

Article Abstract:

A working group made up of research-led universities in the UK has proposed that the 2008 research assessment exercise (RAE) should be last of its type for at least ten years and that a new system of light-touch mini-reviews should instead be implemented every four years. The aim of the working group is to establish a future plan for how research should be judged and planned well ahead of the publication of the 2008 RAE results.
