Children of the divide

Article Abstract:

The presidential elections at the student's union of Queen's University, Belfast, have candidates which are children of the well-known politicians Bernadette McAliskey and John Taylor, of the Ulster Unionist Party. The third candidate, Michelle McAuley is an independent. The bomb at South Quay, London, shocked students throughout the university, and an all-night vigil was held immediately afterwards to demonstrate the NUS/USI's preference for peaceful negotiations.

Threat of violence stalks election day

Article Abstract:

The run-up to Pakistan's election is being marred by unrest in Karachi and allegations of violence at the city's university. However, concerns over academics' rights to reveal the activities of the university's Campus Security Services (CSS) have lessened with the sacking of the vice chancellor by Pakistan's caretaker government. Late in 1996 there were student protests about the purported torture and beatings carried out by the uniformed CSS.

A woman who would be president

Article Abstract:

Irish presidential candidate Mary McAleese is leading opinion polls in spite of being an 'outsider' from northern Ireland. McAleese, who is pro vice chancellor of Queen's University, is a nationalist and a committed Catholic, but she is not afraid to criticize the church. She believes she is responding to the mood of the people, who she says want a president who is above politics and can provide caring outreach.
