Cloistered women seek cash

Article Abstract:

India's University Grants Commission is supporting a request for full financial support from the state for Banasthali Vidyapith, a women's university. The university was initially set up to offset a tradition of early marriage in Rajasthan, northern India, and its first degree course was offered in 1943. Banasthali was given independence from Rajasthan University in 1983. The university is popular with parents and is the only such university in northern India.

Strength in going your own way; University of Central England is not asking for state cash

Article Abstract:

The University of Central England in Birmingham (which was Birmingham Polytechnic) will not be asking for government research funds. Its courses are primarily vocational and it does not have the traditional sources of research work such as a science department. Its policy has been to attract funding directly from commercial sources, which has proved successful in the past three years.
