Currency of a macho pound; importance of a strong monetary image

Article Abstract:

The Prime Minister, John Major, wants the pound to take economic dominance away from the deutschmark now that Britain is a member of the European Rate Mechanism. Historically a strong pound has always been an indication of Britain's role in the world. The dominant deutschmark is disliked by many Conservatives who see it as further evidence of EC influence, and our inability to trade freely in all markets.

Nothing so fragile as a dead cert

Article Abstract:

History has shown that even when opinion polls predict election winners they can misjudge the result. The Republicans have prided themselves on lawkeeping, economic management and control of the left wing in the past, all problems in 1992. The Democrats have traditionally won after Republican disasters. Some commentators see the economy as the biggest issue in 1992.

Article Abstract:

Film was a French invention, but its first century has been dominated by the United States, with Hollywood having vast competitive advantages. 90% of films shown in Britain were American in 1920, and this lead to the 1927 Cinematograph Films Act. This helped to revive the British industry, but with no serious challenge to the US.
