Deadly cloud, silver lining

Article Abstract:

The 1986 Chernobyl nuclear disaster caused numerous deaths and illnesses and rendered much land unusable, but there were also beneficial results. Plans to build new nuclear power stations were suspended, and the safety of existing plants was reviewed. The cost of nuclear energy increased at a time when fossil fuels became cheaper. There has been a revival of interest in nuclear energy in the former Soviet Union in countries with no fossil fuel reserves. The Chernobyl disaster also precipitated the end of the Soviet Union.

The doctors' stroke of luck

Article Abstract:

The death of Stalin may have been premature if doctors and party officials deliberately withheld medical treatment as is currently suspected. Historical evidence shows that the artificial ventilator was not used, even though the particular nature of Stalin's illness would normally have warranted its use. The medical treatment given to Stalin was recorded in a journal which subsequently disappeared without trace.
