Debt-averse poor force U-turn

Article Abstract:

The UK government's plan to target low income groups as potential growth areas for higher education is being thwarted by the aversion to debt among Britain's poor. According to UK education secretary, Estelle Morris, this was not taken into account when the previous education secretary David Blunkett introduced tuition fees to replace maintenance grants.

Tory shadow says former polys have 'lost their way.'

Conservative Shadow Education Secretary Theresa May has suggested the polytechnics which became universities tried to teach too many different courses rather than specialize. She also put forward Conservative plans to award universities endowments to fund their teaching costs.

Gender gap in pay widening, says AUT

Article Abstract:

Issues concerning the the payment gaps between male and female lecturers in Great Britain are discussed. Particular attention is given to the results of a survey published by the Association of University Teachers which found that the gap rose from 14% in 1995 to 15% in 2000.
