Degree market to open up

Article Abstract:

Private businesses will be able to directly compete with the traditional higher education sector and offer their own degrees under newly published government plans. In launching a consultation on new criteria for the granting of degree-awarding powers, the UK's Department for Education and Skills acknowledged that the rules had been clearly framed so that organisations falling outside of the traditional college and university sectors could meet them. The consultation period is due to end in December 2003, with the final criteria expected to be announced in January 2004.
