Article Abstract:

Russian universities are faced with a funding crisis, which affects lecturers' pay, and the availability of teaching materials. Staff have left to earn salaries which allow them a reasonable living standard, in a context of high inflation. Moscow State University is in disrepair, and Svetlana Ter-Minasova, who lectures there, spends a lot of her time seeking private funds for the University, which is funded through the administration of Boris Yeltsin. Courses at the university include English for various professions, to attract dollar fees.

Demands of donor lead Russian to spurn cash

Article Abstract:

The Russian State Humanities University in Moscow, Russia, which accepted over Rouble2.7 bil from Yukos, oil company, has vowed to sever its ties with Yukos unless it receives a guarantee on academic freedom. The university stated that the decision was made as a result of interference from Yukos in the running of the university and was not prompted by the arrest of Mikhail Khodorkovsky, head of Yukos, on fraud and tax evasion charges and the placing of seven other Yukos senior managers on a Russian State prosecutors' wanted list.

Redundancy plan to boost wages

Article Abstract:

An Academy of Sciences modernisation plan aimed to raise salaries threefold would be thousands of Russian researchers sacked. Architects of the plan are hoping it will stop the Russian brain drain by retaining young high flyers with salaries which will, by 2008, average GBP 400 to GBP 700 per month.
