Don't let it blow up in your face

Article Abstract:

Tips for college faculty who either want or have to teach students in laboratory classes. Advice includes befriending the lab technician, who will undoubtedly know more about how any of the lab equipment works than anybody else; encouraging the students to feel a sense of ownership over the experiments; honing your own technical skill, making the lab a sociable place to be; not attempting to do too much; and being aware of technical developments that will make teaching and learning easier.

Article Abstract:

It is argued that for the majority of people in the UK, an education in science is not needed and that the majority of people who do pursue a career in science are not particularly well paid. It is suggested that the way to meet any shortfall in the number of scientists in the country is to attract talented scientists from poorer countries for whom a life in the UK would be an escape to paradise.

An analysis of the state of science education in schools in the UK. It is argued that what is needed to halt the decline in science education is more teachers who are truly enthusiastic about the subject, combined with the training, time and resources to support them.
