Writing a textbook is only worthwhile if the author has a good publisher behind them and this backing will not be forthcoming unless the author has a solid research reputation or comes from an institution which does. Authors, or a group of authors, must also invest time in keeping books up to date and extra material such as websites and podcasts are also becoming increasingly common.
