Draft leak blows ill wind

Article Abstract:

Francois Bayrou, the French education minister, has commissioned a report on higher education which argues for major reforms. The reforms include selection in secondary schools, and permitting universities to recruit lecturers and shed jobs. The report also argues for conversion of some diploma courses to foundation courses. Critics argue that a consultation process set up by the education minister is contradicted by the report, which has not involved consultation.

Vintage year for creme

Article Abstract:

A survey of the performance of the French academic elite has found rising standards. Mathematics candidates have shown improvements in their ability for abstracting and take initiatives, while there are improvements in the organization of ideas and and knowledge in history examinations. Tests in French and modern languages in business schools arethe only area where standards have fallen, and this is especially true for Spanish, and less true for German and English.

Student voters waver

Article Abstract:

Students could have a major impact on French presidential elections in April 1995, and their financial problems are given prominence in the campaign. A higher proportion of younger voters is undecided than in older age groups. Lionel Jospin and Jacques Chirac have reportedly more youth support than Edouard Balladur. Chirac has pledged to hold a referendum on education, while Jospin points to increases in spending when he was minister for education.
