'Duped' v-cs plot RAE revolt

Article Abstract:

An alliance of university vice-chancellors in the United Kingdom is preparing for a revolt against the 2008 research assessment exercise (RAE) after coming to the conclusion that they were duped into accepting plans for a sector-wide race for grants and research-ratings. The move marks the first time that the 94 Group of small research universities, Campaigning for Mainstream Universities, which represents new universities, and the Russell Group of elite universities have been united in questioning the RAE.

Critics fuming over RAE criteria

Article Abstract:

Critics of the research assessment exercise (RAE) claim that plans to switch to four new research grades in the 2008 RAE will harm early-career staff and interdisciplinary research, as well as damaging the international research reputation of the UK. It is argued that academics in the UK have spent the last 15 years explaining to people around the world how the old RAE rating system worked and the new plans mean that in 2008 nobody will understand how good, or bad, research being conducted is.
