Ebonics unleashes tongues

Article Abstract:

Ebonics, the language spoken by many African-Americans, is the subject of a furious debate, having become a metaphor for much that is troubling the US. The Oakland public school board argued in Dec. 1996 that the 28,000 or so of its African-American students who speak Ebonics should be taught in that language until they are ready to move into classrooms where standard English is used. The decision was heavily criticised by many African-American writers and academics but it served to highlight the way in which the US education system is failing students who do not speak English.

Bombings upped the anti

Article Abstract:

Hostility towards Nato, and more particularly towards the US, increased in Greece as a result of the Nato bombing of Yugoslavia, to the extent that the US ambassador was rumoured to have warned Americans to leave the country. The rumour was unfounded but anti-Nato/Americanism remained real in Jun. 1999, as evidenced by the defacing of a small poster on a bronze door at the Benaki Museum in Athens, Greece. The S in USA on the poster had been replaced by a swastika yet no-one had insisted on its removal. Feelings about the Nato action need to be discussed and explored openly.

The Getty grasp on reality

Article Abstract:

The Getty Museum in Los Angeles, CA, could be perceived as a global arts university. The museum has a $4.5 billion endowment and is practically a university with the potential to optimize archaeology, art conservation and information technology. The facility, which cost over $1 billion, incorporates five major buildings and campus programmes which seek to spread intellectualism to a wider audience. The Getty aims to involve minorities via its outreach programmes.
