Mary Ellen Avery is to step down from her position as president of the American Association for the Advancement of Science at the organisation's annual conference in Seattle, Washington,, which is due to take place between 12-16 February 2003. Avery, who is now 77, has spent her career developing pioneering treatments for newborns and has also spent time lobbying the US government on health inequities.

Eleven years--that's one long tutorial

Article Abstract:

A profile of Johnny Lechner, who is about to start his 12th year at the University of Wisconsin. Lechner, who has amassed more than twice the credits he needs to actually graduate, has inspired new legislation in Wisconsin designed to discourage students from dragging out their studies, but Lechner is undeterred, noting that he does not know if he would be as happy anywhere else as he is at university.

Summers and discontents

Article Abstract:

The resignation of Lawrence Summer on 21 February from his post as president of Harvard University after five years came after much criticism of his management style, his perceived arrogance and his suggestion that women are less suited to advanced science than men. Supporters of Summers say his resignation was due to his reformist agenda which threatened powerful vested interests at Harvard.
