Endowments suffer 'huge hit'

Article Abstract:

University endowments in the United Kingdom have fallen by 20% in the last two years, according to the first national audit of university wealth conducted since the Times Higher Education Supplement survey in 2001. The decline in endowments has hit the most prestigious universities and partly offset increased government investment. The latest survey reveals that between July 2000 and July 2002, the decline in the value of the stock market has brought the endowments of Cambridge University down by 26%, or UKPd170 mil, while the endowments of Oxford University fell by 24%, or UKPd85.2 mil, and those of Glasgow University fell by 29% to UKPd91 mil from UKPd128 mil.
