Ex-employee rails at 'smear'

Article Abstract:

Adrian Quinn, a former member of the faculty of the journalism department at Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU), has accused the university of smearing his reputation by issuing false statements about him in an attempt to rebut claims that he and two other lecturers made earlier in 2003 that sub-standard students had been awarded degrees. On 19 May 2003, Janet Martin, head of corporate communications at LJMU issued a formal statement suggesting that the complaints made by all three lecturers were part of "personal vendettas" and were motivated by the hope of "financial gain". Michael Brown, LJMU vice-chancellor, has since written to Quinn to apologise if a false impression had been "inadvertently" created.
