Excellence and equality

Article Abstract:

Wider access to higher educational institutions, particularly Oxford and Cambridge universities, would be greatly improved by additional financial resources. Equality of access is extremely important but standards of education should not be reduced in order to gain extra students. Prospective students should be judged on their potential ability and not only what they have already achieved. Colleges, in the US, have developed special programs to give educational opportunities to people from poorer backgrounds. Some undergraduates are sent to state schools to talk about their experiences.

Time to care about those in care

Article Abstract:

The educational needs of children leaving residential care in the UK have been neglected. These children are too likely to become beggars, prostitutes, go to jail, become homeless or become pregnant. Residential care affects their school performance but attention to their educational needs could improve their self-esteem and allow them to aspire to and work toward a better life. They do not have families to help them if they have enough qualifications to study at university. Funds should be made available to help these children.

Splitting image

Article Abstract:

Most areas of American political discussion now include arguments about 'identity' and 'difference', and it is taken for granted that diversity is an educational goal. The demands for cultural recognition and respect for identity have come from those who believe their vision of themselves and the world has been frozen out. Richard Rorty, professof of humanities at the University of Virginia believes American academics should promote the American project.
