Greenblatt: Act 2, Scene 1

Article Abstract:

Professor of English literature at the University of Berkeley, CA, Stephen Greenblatt argues that texts are embedded in their historical culture but insists that he has never been a card-carrying new historicist. He explains that he began his introduction to the Norton one-volume edition of Shakespeare with details of the 16th-century birthrate and the threat of the plague in order to create the sense that the work is as much about a culture, place and time as about a person. Greenblatt admits that his work has been affected by the 1988 Oxford text of Shakespeare used by the Norton Shakespeare.

The feminine mystique

Article Abstract:

Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique Director and Feminist Writer Luce Irigaray puzzles other feminists who fail to comprehend her ideas as she writes both metaphorically and literally. Irigaray has also faced opposition from feminists because of her attitude to homosexuals whom she suggests miss out on deeper mystical love. Physicist Alan Sokal has been very critical of Irigaray. Irigaray was sacked from the University of Paris in 1974, after her controversial views on Freudian psychoanalysis were published. She believes women should want to be seen as different to men.
