Externals are all fired up

Article Abstract:

The past decade has seen the emergence of a new generation of young, enthusiastic external examiners in the UK, according to a report produced by Plymouth University professors Andrew Hannon and Harold Silver as part of a wider appraisal of the external examiners system in the higher education sector. The report revealed that these examiners would prefer to receive a standard wage for their efforts and get a greater level of recognition from their home institutions for the work they do.

The devil you know

Article Abstract:

While the majority of people involved in higher education dislike the regular audits they must undergo, there are no real alternatives. It is contended that any operation that is funded by the taxpayer, which higher education is to the tune of billions of pounds, must accept that it has to be accountable and that the current audit system is the least onerous system currently available.
