FE chiefs air alarm over new degrees

Article Abstract:

Further education college leaders believe that there is growing evidence that universities are planning to "hijack" the foundation degree agenda in order to secure the only funding available for expansion. They contend that the universities that stand to lose out as a result of increasing competition for research funding are searching for fresh opportunities in teaching through the development of their own foundation degrees, rather than by developing them in partnership with further education. The further education colleges fear that if this trend continues, they will be forced out of the market with much of the work-oriented basis for foundation degrees being lost.

Unhappy returns at Oxford

Article Abstract:

Oxford University's 36 colleges managed to earn on average 3.8% income from their combined assets in 2002-2003, a worse rate of return than if they had just deposited their assets in an high-street bank account, according to a report conducted by independent financial analysts. The report claims that the performance of the colleges' assets has been "lamentably poor", however, college bursars have hit back, branding the report "codswallop" and claiming that it is "conceptually flawed".
