First year's salary: 23 million pounds sterling

Article Abstract:

Some mathematicians are leaving their academic posts to find work in finance. The salary for a research job for a newly qualified PhD in mathematics is around 16,286 pounds sterling whereas if they worked in a bank they could earn more than twice the salary. One mathematician points out by working in finance he has the chance to solve real problems. The loss of mathematicians to business has left a shortage of teachers in finance. Two American physicists set up the successful Prediction Company despite having little experience of the financial world.

Quantification of pre-eruptive exsolved gas contents in silicic magmas

Article Abstract:

The amount and distribution of pre-eruptive exsolved gas present in a crystallizing silicic magma body can be calculated by measuring the amount of H2O, CO2 and trace elements in the glass inclusions of magmas. The method assumes that the concentration of crystals and gas is conserved during the process. The exsolved gas variations cause stable density stratification of the magma body to prevent convective circulation. Measurements of the exsolved gas in the Bishop Tuff, California, show that the concentration of these gases decreases with depth.
