Foot in mouth disease hits nation

Article Abstract:

PhD vivas can involve emotional traumas which vary in nature according to the type and outcome of the viva. Students may have to answer questions on their work and be rendered incoherent. They may suffer catatonia if they are failed, and mania if they are passed, with a feeling of fraud if they pass with minor corrections having to be made. Such behavior in normal society could cause problems, but there is more hope for sufferers in the academic world.

The public transport system at Tubingen, Germany has been revamped, boosting the number of bus routes from eight to 23, with five-minute intervals between buses on the main line between the stations and the university, hospital and housing scheme. Less popular routes have an hourly minibus, and a dial-a-bus system operates at night. Students are offered a discounted season ticket. The revamped system has reduced car drivers to 30% from more than 50%.

How to survive a calling to the bar

Article Abstract:

Conferences which involve an overnight stay in a hotel are often fraught with problems involving excessive drinking. Care should be taken to avoid drinking too much alcohol. Spirits are preferable over beer because they are low in volume and can be combined with water more easily to reduce the total alcoholic intake. Many people adopt teetotalism at conferences as an alternative strategy to avoid alcohol all together.
