For jailed youth, a way out

Article Abstract:

The New Mexico Boys' School has embarked on a novel scheme to impart vocational education to juvenile inmates of correctional institutions who show poor learning skills. The lack of inclination for studies in these individuals can be attributed to mental distress, learning disabilities, alcoholism and drug abuse. The arduous task of training these students has been handled quite effectively by the teachers through designing a new curriculum. The training program gives students hands on experience with business activities through a self-supporting business venture that also pays them wages.

In California, businesses and schools recognize their interdependence

Article Abstract:

The industries of California realize the importance of public education in recent years, and are now not only supporting improvements in school but are initiating programs. Because government aid to education has been cut, donations provided by the industries to the schools are important even if the industries do not want direct involvement with reconstruction of course content. Several school-to-work programs are discussed included 'Workforce Silicon Valley' sponsored by the Santa Clara Manufacturing Group.
