Forgotten grads in the PhD trap

Article Abstract:

A report will be published in November 1993 based on research in 18 universities, and focusing on problems encountered by United Kingdom graduate students, who, the report argues, are inadequately prepared and supervised. The report updates a two year international research project published earlier in 1993. Counselling and guidance for students are inadequate, and there is a lack of quality control. As undergraduate student numbers have increased, staff have had less time for graduate students. Proposals in a science White Paper could bring in a year's preparation for PhD students, which would help solve the problem, according to Mary Henkel, one of the authors of the report.

Great idea, but what's in it for us?

Article Abstract:

Some observers have pointed out the UK government has failed to set aside funding for higher education projects within the new regional development agencies (RDAs). Others point out planning in the RDAs is in the early stages therefore the possible involvement of the universities has yet to be decided. The government have indicated the universities and colleges should get involved in projects to increase wealth in the regions. It has been acknowledged the universities could be very useful to the RDAs but if they lack funds the universities may not be able to afford to get involved.
