Frankie goes to Dusseldorf

Article Abstract:

The British film industry has had a difficult time over the last few years but due to the political changes in Europe, there is considerable optimism that a pan-European film and television industry might prosper. A new initiative, the European Media Project, is working to provide funds for small and medium production companies. The economics of scale are important and if costs could be recouped in the country of origin, sales in other European countries could lead to profits that would be put into new production.

Campus asbestos row goes to court

Article Abstract:

The level of risk from asbestos is the subject of a court case which is pending in France. The Academy of Medicine at the Jussieu University in Paris issued a report on asbestos safety. The university's anti-asbestos committee claims this gives false information to minimize the risk and questions the objectiveness of the report's author. The row follows a French ban on asbestos in 1995 after the publication of an asbestos study by the national medical research institute INSERM.

RAE goes Forth and muliplies

Article Abstract:

The Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) has been criticised for forcing applicants to concentrate too fully on research and therefore neglect their other duties. The future of the RAE is being examined to find ways of making it more active in defining research projects and giving feedback to research applications. The RAE produces funding for research which it considers to be of a sufficient standard.
