From outrage to cant

Article Abstract:

Swiss banks have been condemned for hiding gold looted from the Jews by the Nazis during the second world war, yet their conduct was not exceptional. The Swiss dealt with the Nazis primarily because business is business and their retention of 'heirless assets' is far from unique. Jewish assets deposited with British banks were sequestered during the war and ultimately used for the UK's economic needs. The Israeli government made only feeble attempts to locate heirs before appropriating land in Palestine that had belonged to Central and East European Jews.

Barred from fortress Britain

Article Abstract:

In the five years following World War II, 200,000 East Europeans but only 3,000 Jews were permitted to enter the UK. Anti-Jewish feeling was probably higher than in 1939. Foreign Office staff were afraid that Jewish survivors of Nazi persecution would use the UK as a transition to Palestine, contrary to Arab wishes. The East Europeans included thousands who had fought on the side of the Nazis. It has been discovered that ex-members of the Waffen-SS secretly resided in the UK during the 1950s.

O come all ye faithful

Article Abstract:

Four significantly disparate attitudes to Christmas are presented, including that of a scientist Christian, a Muslim, a Jew, and a retail management expert. It is suggested that Christmas is a period of alienation for Muslims living within Christian culture. Personal accounts of how Christmas will be spent are included, along with an overview of what Christmas means to the retail trade.
