Giants fall victim to HEFCE cut

Article Abstract:

Reductions in funding for higher education have affected Imperial College and Manchester University, England. These two institutions are among nine which will be guven a supplement to take their funding increase for 1995-1996 to 0.5% above the funding for the previous year, which means a reduction in funding in real terms. The funding allocations were made by the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE). The HEFCE funds 137 institutions directly.

Insiders dealing in new markets

Article Abstract:

The 'think tanks' that were linked with Mrs Thatcher's government still see themselves as having a role in John Major's administration. Bodies such as the Adam Smith Institute, the Centre for Policy Studies and the Social Affairs Unit helped to formulate policy on issues such as schools opting-out and the NHS internal market. The European Policy Forum includes Labour and Liberal Democrat politicians to widen the European debate.

The bright blues

Article Abstract:

The Conservative party has ceased to be regarded as the 'stupid party'. Conservatives have always used the insult as an indication of their commonsense and pragmatism. Intellectuals are now in the party. John Redwood, who challenged the party leadership, is a true intellectual with ideas.
