Gloves off as bill enters round three

Article Abstract:

The Labour government faces renewed pressure for changes to a number of elements of its higher education bill, despite the bill passing through the Commons in a dramatic vote on 27 January 2004. Rebel Labour MPs have expressed their confidence that they will be able to overturn the five-vote margin that the bill passed in order to remove variable fees at a later stage of debate over the bill and universities are preparing to lobby the government about changes to the remit of the Office for Fair Access.

Midwife of fees calls for freeze

Article Abstract:

Baroness Blackstone, the then Higher Education Minister who introduced university tuition fees eight years ago, has asked the government not to charge students more. Baroness Blackstone has said it would be a 'profound mistake' to increase fees from GBP 3,000 following a planned review of top-up fees in 2009.
