Going to work on an egg

Article Abstract:

Obstetrician, gynaecologist, and recently appointed Labour peer Robert Winston cannot see any argument for denying couples who want a baby and stand the chance of passing on an inherited disease the opportunity of having a child free of the gene. Winston argues that he and his team are simply enhancing a natural method of selection when they screen embryos for cystic fibrosis or an inherited form of bowel cancer. Winston believes that his latest interest, developing in vitro fertilisation techniques to mature eggs outside the body, could be the most important thing he has ever worked on.

Death in the air

Article Abstract:

There is concern over possible health hazards from electric power lines following research at Bristol University, England, which has identified a possible link between cancer and power lines. The UK National Radiological Protection Board argues that power lines are safe. Denis Henshaw, who carried out the research, is seeking more funding to carry out further research outdoors rather than in laboratories. The UK is less willing to accept that such a risk could exist than some other countries including the US.
