Help train if you gain: employers should help fund the universities that educate their workforce

Article Abstract:

It is now time to radically rethink the links between tertiary education, the state and the economy in the UK. Universities cannot continue to be seriously underfunded, and attention should be given to making employers, which benefit from trained graduates, meet some of the cost of this training.

Penny bazaar principle in bizarre setting

Article Abstract:

The United Kingdom government has decided that there should be three prices charged for university courses geared to domestic students in the United Kingdom. These prices are 750 pounds sterling, 1,600 pounds and 2,800 pounds. Universities are not permitted to ask students for additional sums. There is a case for price controls, since the most prestigious universities could otherwise make large profits due to restrictions in supply, but there is also a case for greater pricing flexibility.

Don't care for debt

Article Abstract:

United Kingdom students are faced with having to pay fees and repay loans, and this is affecting the type of courses they choose. They are assessing courses more in terms of what will bring them a well-paid career, and this tend to imply computing and business studies course. This leads to the problem that occupations where the pay may be low, but social conscience is important, will lack recruits. Language, dentistry, teaching, architecture and medicine courses will attract fewer students, and this will affect society.
