Here, hear and over there

Article Abstract:

The UK was once seen as an example of how democracy could tackle problems inherent in capitalism. Civic culture became undermined from the 1960s, and solidarity was eroded, leading to the loss of a strong opposition to the attacks of the 1980s Conservative governments on compromise politics of post 1945 years. UK politics came to resemble the US model. Demands for constitutional reform could weaken government and there would be a need for a president of the type found in the US.

So farewell then, citizen servant!

Article Abstract:

The United Kingdom civil service has ceased to be public spirited, and suffered severe attacks during the 1980s, such as the winding up of the Supplementary Benefits Commission, and political attacks on the Black report on the National Health Service. Ideals of efficient, impartial, bureaucrats, as described by Max Weber, are no longer respected. Independent and scrupulous research is rejected, and motivation is now a problem in the civil service, with this loss of idealism.

Literati dine out on the cultural cold war

Article Abstract:

An analysis of the impact of the US Central Intelligence Agency's funding of British intelligentsia in the 1960s in an effort to stop the spread of communism. It is argued that the results of the CIA's efforts were mixed, but that they did succeed in making the political culture of left-wing parties in the United Kingdom less socialist and more Atlanticist, thereby paving the way for Tony Blair and new Labour.
