History is a balloon survivor

Article Abstract:

University of Wisconsin-Green Bay social science faculty students' participation in Great Balloon Debates is discussed. A balloon debate in which staff representing anthropology, economics, geography, political science, psychology and sociology put forward the case for the survival of their particular discipline over any other resulted in a victory for anthropology. However history emerged victorious when it was added to the passenger list in a similar debate in which the arguments were put forward by the students themselves.

Send in the history platoon

Article Abstract:

Plans for a 'Museum of Europe' have raised questions about how European history should be represented. It would be misguided to model European history on US history, but Europeans could learn much about European history from the Americans. Larger US universities offer courses in the respective European national histories, but foundation courses are generally organized on a pan-European basis.

Angst about grey matter

Article Abstract:

Research has revealed that one third of faculty staff in the US are aged 55 or older. Over the last decade the number of academic staff aged under 45 has dropped to 34%, from 41%. The generation gap between students and lecturers can be used to demonstrate the connection between history and the present.
