'Improving affordability by cutting student aid is an idea that only a California Republican could advance with a straight face'

Article Abstract:

Issues relating to the higher education system in the United States are examined from the point of view that while higher education in the US remains the envy of the world, it is, in fact, becoming unaffordable for many Americans. It is argued that the problem faced by the Bush administration is that they have no idea how to make higher education more affordable and less expensive, nor do they have any idea about how to improve graduation rates without investing additional money - something that the administration is adamant is a bad thing.

'The US experience when low-income students drop out suggests that efforts to expand access amid a top-up fee regime may hinder social mobility'

Article Abstract:

Research in the United States has revealed that instead of helping social mobility, higher education can actually hinder the prospects of many, with those from low-income backgrounds who drop out, for whatever reason, finding themselves much worse off, with huge debts and broken dreams. As the United Kingdom prepares to introduce its own top-up fee system for higher education, this could be a situation that finds itself repeated.

'What might we sensibly do about reforming degree classification? What we could usefully do, as usual, is steal the Americans' clothing'

Article Abstract:

An analysis of recent proposals for the reform of the degree classifications system in the United Kingdom. It is argued that the proposals are flawed and that more could be gained by examining the American honours system.
