Investing in success puts elites in red

Article Abstract:

The Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) has led elite research universities in the UK to spend large amounts of money on improvements to faculty and facilities, placing some at financial risk and many at a loss if funding does not come through. The University of London is operating at the highest deficit, 5 million (pounds sterling). Improvements nationwide made as a result of the 1996 RAE are estimated at 170 million (pounds sterling), and additional funding to help shortfalls appears unlikely.

However, the move, which is a climbdown on research concentration by the council, is expected to bring more kudos than additional cash for the departments.
