Is foreign aid really a bad trip?

Article Abstract:

Some argue that international conferences are culturally and economically important to the host nations, but others contend that encouraging air travel to such locations is environmentally irresponsible. Organisers of conferences in exotic locations are having to deal with this issue as more and more of those invited to attend conferences are expressing their concern about the ethical issues involved.

Advice for people planning academic conferences on how to organise them properly and attract a large number of delegates. Tips include starting planning early, being realistic about the number of people that could attend, getting a keynote speaker who is likely to draw in a large number of delegates, getting professionals in to help plan the event and having plenty of helpers on hand at the venue.

Advice for university teachers and lecturers on how to teach students from a range of cultural backgrounds without becoming obsessed with being "politically correct". Tips include defining the terms you intend to use and setting the boundaries of a discussion at the start of a session, communicating clearly, finding out about different cultures and being aware of language problems.
