Article Abstract:

Advice for university lecturers and teachers on how to deal with troublesome and disruptive students. Tips include trying to find out why the student is being difficult; setting ground rules for behaviour and sticking to them; getting the support of the institution; making the learning experience and health and safety of the other students the priority; and not boring students into behaving badly.

Don't rush in to tell it like it is

Advice for university and college faculty on how to conduct tutorials. Tips include, making sure the students know what they are there for; not appearing to be tired, bored or drunk; encourage the students to contribute but avoid sounding like a know-it-all; use different methods to involve students; and remember to listen and not feel compelled to fill silences with your own ideas.

An analysis of the dangers involved in lecturers trying too hard to be popular with their students by trying to be funny when they are not. In order to be popular, academics are instead advised to be punctual, be approachable, know their subject, demonstrate a liking for the students and, above all else, show enthusiasm for what they are teaching.
