Young scholars lose out in RAE

Article Abstract:

Concerns about the pressures placed on young academics have been raised in response to the proposed criteria for the 2008 research assessment exercise. The criteria, which were published in July 2005, contain expectations that academics should submit four research papers, but, it is argued, many young academics are still busy being trained in how to do their jobs properly and have not had the time to fulfil these ground rules.

Marketing and fund-raising heads have been warned that universities must raise standards and become more customer-focused in the new fee-driven culture if they are to survive. Many insititutions will find it difficult to fill degree courses in coming years as the number of school-leavers declines and students become more discerning.
