Article Abstract:

Custom publishing of textbooks is a rapidly expanding market in the US where industry officials expect the print-on-demand market to be worth $550 million by the end of the decade. Professors at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles can obtain custom textbooks consisting of chapters from existing works, journal articles, magazine excerpts and unpublished case studies, selected to meet the needs of students on their particular courses. New software enables royalties to be forwarded direct to the publisher. On-demand publishing is also being developed in Britain.

Rise of the fast food learning model

Article Abstract:

The University of Phoenix has been experiencing opposition when it has tried to open a facility in some areas of the US. The University is run as a distance learning operation, it was started in 1976. It is aimed at adult students who study on a part-time basis. Around 90% of the students also work in full-time occupations. A number of major companies use the University for staff training. It is a private profit making business. There are 65,000 students enrolled in the University across Canada and the US. Some 10,000 of the students learn online.

Article Abstract:

Planned changes intended to clarify the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education classification system for universities have upset status-minded campuses. The system catgeorises amounts of research and undergraduate education which universities conduct, but not whether they universities are good at it.
